How serious is uttering threats?

Like all crimes, Alberta’s courts and prosecutors take uttering threats seriously. Interestingly, uttering threats is under the “Assaults” section of the Criminal Code, and can be considered a violent offence.

Sentences for uttering threats can be as high as years in jail, although they are often much lower. How seriously uttering threats is taken – and how harsh of a sentence you could get – will depend on what kind of threat you are charged with, whether the crown prosecution as proceeded by summary or indictment, and other circumstances.
